Cancellation of the race Friday
Posted 4:41 PM :: 966 Views :: 2009 Race

The jury decided to cancel the race Friday because of the weather situation. The whole organisation of Arctic Circle Race had crossed their fingers during the night - hoping that the wind and the gusts would be less than the forecast from Thursday evening promised. However, the weather goods were not with Arctic Circle Race on Friday.

The snow had continued to fall all Thursday and even Friday morning as well. A beautiful layer of light white powder has covered the surroundings of Sisimiut and almost made the procession to the church on Thursday impossible to watch for the inhabitants of Sisimiut and to document for the many cameras.

However, the weather forecast quickly showed it was right. The wind started around the time, where the race should have started Friday morning. The jury had no choice to cancel the race for the day. The wind turned the beautiful white powder to dangerous whiteout. And even if the unrealistic hope should occur, that the wind would stop early in the afternoon, the organisers would not be able to drive the volunteers out to their positions along the track. Furthermore, the track makers would have an almost impossible task to prepare the route for the skiers in a couple of minutes.

The jury had been in close contact with the Meteorological Institute in Kangerlussuaq who also saw no other possibilities than to cancel the race for the day. The decision by the jury was respected by everyone in Sisimiut, when the wind made the visibility close to zero for several hours.
